New guidelines for displaying ribbons in support of 'awareness campaigns' in downtown New Canaan were approved at Monday's meeting of the Board of Selectmen .
Following up on what he said were, "a few complaints," from residents and merchants and after conversations with interested parties, Tom Stadler, the town's Administrative Officer, presented the Board with a proposal for new guidelines.
The ribbons, like those currently on display in town in recognition of October's designation as Domestic Violence Awareness Month , will now be restricted to a two-week period rather than a month.
Additionally, the guidelines will require that the ribbons be displayed only on the lamposts on Elm and Main Streets.
Stadler said after the meeting when reached for comment that these ribbons create recognition of, "very, very worthy organizations," but that as the campaigns have grown to include other streets, with ribbons on signs and trees, that "maybe it just needs to be toned back a bit.
