Most schools mark the last week in October with activities emphasizing an anti-drug message. The message often includes warnings against smoking and abusing alcohol or prescription drugs. Here is just a sampling of events around the county:
HUGHSON: Leadership students conduct 45-minute anti-tobacco presentations at schools. Ross Middle School held a sidewalk art competition Thursday; dress-up days included pajama day and nerd day. Fox Road Elementary collected socks and gloves for charity and items for the animal shelter; its dress-up days included wearing sunglasses for "I'm Too Cool for Drugs" day and camouflage for "Declare War on Drugs" day.
KEYES: Keyes Charter School had anti-tobacco information at its Fall Into Books festival Thursday night. Keyes Elementary School will celebrate next week, starting Monday with its annual Pumpkin Run and Family Barbecue; dress-up days will be "Turn Your Back on Drugs" by wearing clothes backward and "Team Up Against Drugs" with team or college logo shirts.

CheethamBellJWT's design team Germ has created an awareness ribbon for international animal charity IFAW.
The ribbon will be used to promote the anti-ivory campaign and will be launched during Animal Action Week (3-9 October) in thousands of schools worldwide.
Its design features elephant-shaped ears attached to a white ribbon which signifies the ivory. While the concept originated in Manchester the production took place in Africa through Learn to Earn, an organisation which aims to train disadvantaged groups to become self-sufficient.
Learn to Earn employed several groups of women to produce the elephant ribbons, most of whom are single parents and many of whom are living with HIV.
Adrian Hiel, communications officer at IFAW, said: "We issued a brief to communications agencies to come up with an awareness raising idea for the anti-ivory campaign and CheethamBellJWT ‘s concept of creating awareness ribbons provided us with a great media neutral solution that everyone can get involved with....
