We hope her shelter will serve as a model for other shelters in the US and that she will continue to expand BOF services nationally. OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and local women are telling their stories, hoping to encourage others suffering at the hands of an abusive spouse to get out and get help.
For more than 20 years, Cyrellia Toney, 55, stayed with a man who beat, choked, controlled and humiliated her on a regular basis.
"I knew it was wrong, what he was doing and what I was letting him do," Toney said.
"I just didn't know there was help out there," Toney said. "I didn't know there was places to get help."
When Toney was 40 years old she said her now-ex-husband turned violent at a family dinner, and instead of causing her mother and sister any grief, she reluctantly took her then-15-year-old son and left with her spouse.
"We got in the car and he back-fisted me," Toney said. "I was bleeding. I couldn't see. I was dazed, but I'd had enough and wasn't go home with him."
Toney said she waited for the vehicle to stop, then hollered for her son to fling open the backdoor and he jumped from the backseat to the sidewalk. Toney did the same from the front seat....

Some breast cancer-awareness advocates have coined the term "pinkwashing" for
when a company or organization does a pink breast cancer promotion, but
at the same time sells and profits from pink-theme products.
Some of these pink products have generated plenty of discussion among advocates and concerns that one of the most successful charity campaigns in recent history has lost its focus.
"Any why can't these large corporations simply donate a portion of their enormous profits to charities, without the promotional campaigns? It drove me nuts to see Borders (when it existed) suggesting to patrons that they buy, at full price, a book for a needy child. This was a wonderful way for Borders to increase sales under the cover of "charity." It similarly drives me nuts to see local supermarkets suggesting that patrons buy, at full price, bags of pet food for donation to the local animal shelter. For the supermarkets to simply donate the products to the shelter would make much more sense, given that most of the patrons who buy such food probably do not itemize on their federal income tax returns in order to reap the full benefits of their generosity. Every giving opportunity has been turned into a profit-making opportunity by corporations more interested in their share prices and gross earnings than in improving the society that supports and protects them."
