Thompkins students get their hands dirty for Red Ribbon Week
— Students at James Thompkins Middle School got their hands dirty Friday doing some festive slashing and gutting for Red Ribbon Week, an annual awareness program designed to prevent children from using alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
As part of their traditional Pumpkin Carving Contest, the 165 students split up into 64 teams and spent an hour after school carving pumpkins in the cafeteria. The pumpkins were judged at the Halloween dance following the contest. Students voted on pumpkins in four categories: cutest, weirdest, scariest and best overall. Winners receive a cash prize from the school's Parent Teacher's Association.
For seventh-grader Brook Debmond, her team's pumpkin aims to win the cutest. They carved out a catlike pumpkin, covered it with vanilla frosting and pressed individual candy corns into it to represent fur. Debmond said she got the from the Internet.
"I looked on Google for cute ideas," said Debmond. "It was the only one with candy so I chose it.

His efforts led to the disassembly of a major drug smuggling operation. This success drew the attention of drug cartel leaders and as a result, on February 7, 1985, they kidnapped Agent Camarena. Family and friends began wearing red ribbons to honor the sacrifice of this dedicated law enforcement officer and take a stand against the illegal drug trade....
