Mumbai, Aug. 8: Gold surged past Rs 25,000 per 10gm on the local bullion markets for the first time ever, cresting a wave triggered by the deep turmoil in the world’s stock and bond markets that has forced panicky investors to scramble for safe havens.

Investors around the world have been pouring their money lately into gold — always seen as a safe house when stocks buckle on fears of a looming economic crisis.

Gold vaulted above $1700 an ounce on global markets for the first time after pledges by the Group of Seven and the European Central Bank failed to quell turbulence in the financial markets.

Among the metros, gold of 99.9 purity (24 carat) costs the most in Calcutta at 25,295 per 10gm. The 22-carat or 99.5 purity — which is largely used to make jewellery in Calcutta — is going for Rs 24,000 per 10gm.
