Why does spinning the curling stone clockwise or anti-clockwise make it turn or straighten.
The stone itself is concave so only a small amount of it is in contact with the ice. The ice is not smooth. Water is sprinkled on it so it has a pebbled, concrete-like texture. Since the stone is traveling on this rough surface, the turning motion causes it to curl.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch-110 in Trenton received an $85,000-cheque to improve the safety and usability of its Quinte Street facility by replacing the leaky roof.
Gary Newman, president of Branch 110 in Trenton, said the legion had already applied for the grant last year, but didn't make the "hit list" before this year.
"It's a really good news for the Branch-110 and its members," he said. "The building here was built in the 1950s and the roof is getting worse every year for the last few years. We got the cheque today (Thursday) and will be officially presenting it to our members with Mayor of Quinte West John Williams at the end of August.

Chris Plys of the U.S. throws a stone during their men's curling round robin match against France.

"We never really got on one path," says Rick Patzke, the chief operating officer for USA Curling, who said there was never any cohesive plan in place to win and that the training ahead of these Games was essentially a write-off. "There wasn't total buy-in," he says. By the time the Olympics came around, Mr. Patzke adds, USA Curling was resigned to the fact that it was really preparing for 2014. "We started with Sochi and we worked backward," he says.
