Area families recall Italian-American roots

Several Hazleton area families once again will partake in the ancient tradition of the cinti the next two weekends.

Each has their own story of how they got involved, but their reasons for carrying the cinti (pronounced chin-tee) - to honor their Italian-American roots and practice their faith - are the same.

The heavy, four-handled object, similar to the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible, will be carried with pride and penance by family members in a multiple-block procession, despite weather conditions that could easily make carrying the cinti more difficult.

Cinti, also called candlehouses, were a tradition brought to the United States by Italian immigrants. Today there are only two parishes in the Hazleton area that still carry on the tradition.

Larry and Dennis Tedesco recalled watching the cinti being carried in the procession for the Feast of St. Mauro at Our Lady of Grace Church, now Queen of Heaven Parish, from the front porch of their uncle's home on 15th and Vine streets, with anticipation.
