If nothing else, Natick businessman Nathaniel Clark had gumption. In less than two years subsequent to the construction of his block-long building in downtown Natick, it burned to the ground in the Great Fire of 1874.
But Clark had not amassed his great fortune, nor gained the affection of the whole community for nothing. Within a year he had built a brand-new structure, including new 80-foot additions at the north and south ends, that came to be called “The Clark Block,” a designation it bears to this day.
Victorian and Italianate in style and constructed of brick and sandstone, it was for decades the largest building in Middlesex County. With an enormous concert hall on its third floor, office space on the second and ample room for retail stores on the first, the Clark Block dominated downtown Natick, just as it does to this day.
Throughout the last quarter of the 19th century and well into the second half of the 20th, the Clark Block served as the epicenter of town life. Municipal offices occupied its second floor and town meetings were held in the Concert Hall. Then, as now, the first floor contained retail establishments, fulfilling in fair measure all the needs of local shoppers.
