The Assertive Cancer Patient : Robbi: Mom Won't Eat
Robbi's very first e-mail to me asked about buying some special prayer beads for her mother, who is also named Jeanne, and went on to talk about what was really bothering her.
July 20, Robbi to Me
Thank you for your words to my Mom.
The biggest issue I have been having caring for her is food. She is 69 years old and she has lost 50 pounds since May and is so skinny that she has to use a walker and wheelchair because she is so weak.
The dietitians want her taking in 1500 calories and I am lucky to get her to take in 500 in a day! She always feels full and I feel so bad telling her she needs to eat more. She wants to stop being dependent on help because she has never been ill before this diagnosis so she is used to her fierce independence.
I am only 32 so sometimes I am overwhelmed with everything and I feel like a kid trying to "encourage" her to eat more. The role reversal has been tough. Not to mention I am a school teacher and I have to go back to work in 3 weeks. I took off the last 3 weeks of last school year because mom ended up in the hospital that entire time with a severe uterine infection and I need to hold onto my fmla time for appointments, chemo, and hospital stays.
