Longtime costume designer bids adieu to the stage
As a thank you gift, costume designer Sally Fortier was given a bracelet adorned with a cowboy boot charm in 1977 after a production of “Annie Get Your Gun.”
About 23 musicals later, Fortier’s silver band blossoms with dozens of iconic trinkets like a small Buddha embodying “The King & I,” a miniature arch for “Meet Me in St. Louis” and a long, scaly crocodile symbolizing one of her favorites, “Peter Pan.”
“It’s gotten hard to wear, but I wear it,” joked Fortier, 65, who displays the jewelry on her wrist every opening weekend of a show. “It means a great deal to me. It’s one of my most treasured things.”
After 27 years of working at Maine West High School, Fortier will say goodbye to her stage family with this weekend’s production of “Taming of the Shrew.” The wardrober extraordinaire, who also runs the high school bookstore, is retiring in December, ending a 40-year career in the design business.
