Couple say their pioneer homestead is awash with spirits – friendly and not
The first time I saw my “ghost” she was still very much alive and giving me an unnerving, eerie feeling as she studied me intently through the narrowly cracked door.
It was 1965. I had come to visit another neighbor, Margaret. All I could see were those eyes right there at the crack of the door.
A few months later Margaret called. Her neighbor’s apartment had become available following the old woman’s death. Word was that the woman had been a hermit, rarely leaving her apartment.
I was immediately drawn to the rustic charm of this little artist’s garret. Despite it’s diminutive size, it looked out over Sioux City, owing not only to its oversized bay window, but also its hillside location.
The entire apartment fit into the huge Federal-style Victorian bedroom it had once been. The furniture had been there for so many decades they had long ago become antique.
To this day, we often recall the cold and blustery late autumn day when my boyfriend blew into my apartment at the end of a long trip from his college in Storm Lake. It was twilight.
